Toughra
On most of the Ottoman coins you can find a Toughra on the obverse. This is in fact the Sultan’s name. Every sultan had his own Toughra, but in practice Toughras look so nearly alike that they do not help us in identification because they are virtually unreadable. This means that when the sultan’s name is in Toughra form, and therefore not written elsewhere, the date will give the only indication as to which sultan we are dealing with. Not all coins with a Toughra are Ottoman. We can also find a Toughra on the coins of the Khalifas of the Sudan, by the rulers of Saudi Arabia, Hyderabad and Bahawalpur. The most commonest Toughras are Ottoman.
